Therefore, please be aware that the anaesthesia services provided by the Specialist Anaesthetist will incur separate charges from the surgical fees. Anaesthesia Fees

Anaesthesia fees can vary due to several factors, including the complexity and duration of the procedure, the type of anaesthesia used, the individual anaesthetist's fees, and any additional preoperative and postoperative care required. The fee will be partially subsidized by Medicare and your Health Fund (if you have private health insurance). Please note that there will be an out-of-pocket expense for you after receiving rebates.

What is oral sedation, IV, or twilight sedation?

Oral sedation involves taking a pill or liquid by mouth to help you relax. You’ll remain awake but feel drowsy and calm, with some patients having limited memory of the procedure. It typically takes 30 minutes to an hour to take effect and is best for mild to moderate anxiety or less complex procedures.

IV or twilight sedation is administered through an IV directly into your bloodstream, providing quick and deep relaxation. You’ll be very relaxed, possibly semi-conscious but still responsive. The effects are almost immediate, making it ideal for higher anxiety or more complex procedures. Please note that IV sedation is not a general anaesthetic.

Which sedation method is right for me?

The choice between oral and IV sedation depends on your anxiety level, the complexity of the procedure, and your overall health. Your oral surgeon will discuss your options and recommend the best method for your needs.

Oral and IV sedation are generally safe when administered by trained professionals. Your medical history and current health will be reviewed to ensure there are no contraindications.

An anaesthetist is a medical doctor who specialises in anaesthesia and peri-operative medicine, and has completed a Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists. Their primary role is to ensure the safety and comfort of patients undergoing surgical or medical procedures that require anaesthesia. Anaesthetists play a crucial role in the medical team, working closely with surgeons, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care before, during, and after surgical procedures.

Can everyone receive sedation?

Most patients can safely receive sedation, but those with certain medical conditions, allergies, or medications may need to discuss alternatives with their dentist or oral surgeon. A thorough medical evaluation will determine if sedation is appropriate for you.

How long does it take for the sedation to wear off?

For oral sedation, it can take several hours for the effects to wear off completely. IV sedation wears off more quickly, but you might still feel groggy for several hours after the procedure. It’s important to have someone drive you home and stay with you until the effects fully subside.

Are there any side effects?

Common side effects of both oral and IV sedation include drowsiness, dry mouth, and slight amnesia regarding the procedure. These effects are usually temporary and resolve within a few hours.
